Sister Queen Scott, 75, was born April 25, 1941 to the late Ms. Georgia B. Gipson and Mr. Payton Garner in Ringgold, Louisiana. Queen was one of nine children and was primarily raised by her mother and seven older siblings. She started working on the family farm at the early age of 12. Queen had to begin her daily chores which included milking the cows, feeding the pigs, picking cotton, and carrying water from the spring that was ½ a half- mile away, to the main house every day before sunrise in order to get them done before going to school. The other children also helped plow and plant the fields, but Queen was not ever allowed to help with this task because she couldn’t plow in a straight line! Even though it was a grueling and difficult schedule, she persisted at it and continued for many years, as it became a part of her daily routine. While living in Ringgold, she was also a loyal member of the Springhill CME Church and regularly attended services there.

Queen attended Ringgold Colored High School in Ringgold, LA, and two weeks after graduation in 1959, Queen she left Ringgold and her family to move to Larned, Kansas. When she arrived, she reconnected with an old classmate, Leon B. Scott, and shortly thereafter they decided to get married. To their union four children were born: Patricia Ann Gully, Lester LeRoger Scott, Le Ann Stroupe, and Betty Jo Thomas.

While living in Larned, Queen worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital. In June of 1971, the family moved to Kansas City, MO, where two of Queen’s brothers, Herman Bush and Wiley P. Garner were already living. Although Queen was living in Kansas City, she maintained ties to her hometown through her involvement as an active member of the Louisiana Club, where she served as Chaplain. Queen’s first job after moving to Kansas City was at the Donsworth Nursing Home, where she began a lifelong career as a service provider in dietetics and nutrition. Throughout her working career, Queen held multiple supervisory and food service management positions at a variety of businesses in the Kansas City area including, Senior Estates, Charlotte, Western Missouri, Shalom Geriatric Center, D’Bronx, Blooms, and New York Delicatessen to name just a few. As a supervisor at these businesses, Queen touched and enriched the lives of so many people who all grew to love her and become a part of her extended family. Upon her retirement, Queen continued to be an active and engaged participant in the Kansas City community through her volunteer work, while also spending time caring for her younger brother Wiley P. Garner.

As soon as the family moved to Kansas City, Queen and Leon joined and became active members of Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church. Although Queen was involved in several activities and committees at the church, most of her time was spent serving on the Usher Board. In this role, Queen spent countless Sunday's standing on her post at the church, welcoming visitors, greeting members, and fulfilling the other responsibilities the position entailed. Queen absolutely loved this role in the church, and it allowed her to do what she excelled at - helping people. And just like when she was standing on her post at the church, Queen truly never met a stranger and always openly welcomed everyone into her life. We now believe she’s greeting newcomers and Standing Post in God’s House!

Queen departed this earthly life on June 24, 2016. She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia B. Gipson; father, Payton Garner; sisters, Mary Collins and Lula Jefferson; and brothers, Early Collins, Joseph Collins, Herman Bush, and Wiley P. Garner.

She leaves to cherish and honor her memory: her husband and partner in life, Leon B. Scott; three daughters, Patricia Ann Gully (Ted) and Betty Jo Thomas (Kevin) of Kansas City, MO, and LeAnn Stroupe (Chris) of Columbia, MO; one son, Lester LeRoger Scott of Miami, FL; four sisters, Bessie Collins of Kansas City, MO, Annie Garner of Shreveport, LA, Elnora Lott of Dallas, TX and Bessie Lee Randle (Clark) of Desota, TX; one brother, Furley Collins; four grandchildren, Steven Scott, Tyrese Gully, Lauren Stroupe, and Langston Stroupe; special nieces, Michelle Robinson (Kim) and Louise Davis; aunts, Cleo Ross and Chris Garner; God daughter, LaShawnda Childress; three sisters-in-law, Mary E. Collins, Mattie Collins, and Stella Bush; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
