OZEAL CARR MAYFIELD was born on January 18, 1934, in Farmerville, Louisiana, to James Albert Carr and Vera Manning Carr. The sixth of eight children, she grew up rooted in family, faith, and the kind of small-town stories that stay with you.
Ozeal attended Grambling High School and later Grambling College, reflecting her lifelong love for learning and reading.
Ozeal was united in marriage with Fred Thomas Mayfield on May 10, 1956, in Grambling, Louisiana. Shortly after marrying, they lived in Amarillo, Texas for two years before deciding that Detroit, Michigan offered a better life. Together, they built a life of partnership sharing a love for fishing, bowling and traveling. They shared forty-seven years together before Uncle Fred transitioned to glory.
She confessed Christ at an early age at Mt Harmony Baptist Church in Ruston Louisiana. In Detroit, Ozeal became a member of Christian Community Baptist Church. She retired from the United States Postal Service after a distinguished career. In 2017, she moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, and joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was a staunch believer in the Word and loved to study and meditate on scripture.
On January 18, 2026, her 92nd birthday, the Lord called sweet and loving Auntie Ozeal home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Vassie, Jimmie Lee, Roy, and James; and three sisters, Georgia, Lillian, and Clementine. She leaves behind eight nieces, three nephews, a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and lifelong friend James Milton Cornwell.
Graveside services will be February 7, 2026 at Grambling Memorial Gardens.
