On Monday, July 5, 1948, God showered George and Ola Mae Birdsong in Greenwood, LA with their 12th child, a baby girl named Myria Laruth, named after her father’s sister Myria in Denver, Colorado. Myria was a joyful child and learned to sing at an early age. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at Old Greenwood Baptist Church on Wednesday night, July 15, 1959 under the leadership of Rev. Sam Price. On Sunday morning, August 2, 1959, Myria was baptized in Tucker’s Pond across the road from where we lived and fished a many day after school. The first Sunday in August was better known as “Big Day”. Myria looked forward to Big Day every year so she could have the double dip ice cream cones and eat delicious food. She participated faithfully in Sunday School, BTU, BYPU, Youth Department, and Choir.
Myria attended Walnut Hill High School, Class of 1966. She kept in constant contact with her classmates and loved visiting them and the elderly. Ella Mae Lee was her best friend who she visited frequently in Keithville. She had a big heart and did as the Bible commanded seeing to the needs of others, never putting herself first. We use to tease her that the motor of her car never cooled off until at night. Her career with Caddo Parish Schools led her to Linear School on the Cooper Road for many years. After retiring , she was a child caregiver. Her greatest and most memorable days were spent with Coco Hudson and her 3 boys. She loved Coco so deeply and spoke proudly of her boys all the time.
Myria was blessed to marry her high school sweet heart , Roy Matthew Lawson in 1966. As a military couple, they traveled to many destinations through out the USA and Germany. To this union four boys were born. Roy Matthew Jr, Felix DeWayne, John Fitzgerald, and Myron. She was a loving and kind mother to her boys, never finding faults in them, always lifting them up, and loved them beyond measure. She never missed a birthday singing Happy Birthday to each one. She always called her daughter-in-laws, DAUGHTER.
On Tuesday morning, 1:30 am, at Willis Knighton South Medical Center, Myria answered her call from labor to reward. Awaiting her reunion in heaven was her mother and father, seven (7) brothers, George Edward, Robert James, Huey Pierce, William, Martin Earl, Lewell Curney, and Albert Sr.
Forever cherishing her life filled with memories are her four sons:
