Ever a champion of the family, Ethel T. Odom served God and her community.
Born August 29, 1933, Ethel was the eldest of seven children born to Helen and Clifton Toney. She finished Booker T. Washington High School in 1950, the first graduating class.
A Christian career mom, Ethel T. Odom(husband Joseph E. Odom, d.2009) instilled in their children their responsibilities to use their talents to serve God. She led by example, serving as Girl Scout Troop Leader and 4-H Leader for at least 15 years.
Ethel T. Odom took the title “Travelling Matriarch” to heart, completing a 14-year tour of duty, as tag team with Joe, in Virginia to care for grandchildren. There she was under “watch care” of First Baptist Church of Hampton, participating in several auxiliaries, including St. Paul Adult Sunday School Class #2; the Food Services Ministry; the Helping Hands Ministry where she would drive members to dialysis and medical appointments. At the Peninsula Fine Arts Museum, Mrs. Odom volunteered at the art library. She was also affectionately known to most pre-K to 4th graders only as “Grandma” as she volunteered as Assistant Librarian with St. Mary’s Star of the Sea School for several years (1995 until 2004).
She departed her earthly body on Sunday April 25, 2021.
