SHREVEPORT, LA - Edward B. Hudson, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, educator and friend passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 15 from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM.  A celebration of his life will be Friday, July 16 at 11:00 AM.  Both services will be held at Avenue Baptist Church, 901 West 70th Street, and masks will be respectfully required. Officiating will be Reverend C. L. Hicks, Pastor.

Known as “Hut” by many, Mr. Hudson was born on January 12, 1937 in the Growing Valley Community of Minden, Louisiana.  He was the second child and oldest son born to the union of J. D., Sr. and Ludy (Warren) Hudson. His formal schooling began at Growing Valley Church School.  Mr. Hudson was a proud member of the “Class of 1956” of Webster High School in Minden.  After graduation, he attended Grambling College, majoring in elementary education.  While at Grambling, he was inducted as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. During his senior year at Grambling, he was drafted into the United States Army and spent two years in Fort Bragg, South Carolina and Crailsheim, Germany.  He returned to Grambling to complete his student teaching and earn a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. A few years later, he earned a Masters in Elementary Education from Louisiana Tech University.

He began his career in education as an elementary math teacher at Brooks Street and Ingersoll.  He later was promoted to principal and spent many years at Creswell and Riverside.  Both of his children were “blessed” with attending school where “Daddy” was principal and had the experience of being sent to his office by a teacher, which made for interesting conversations at dinner those evenings.  He retired from the Caddo Parish School Board in October, 1993 after 30 years of service.  Even after retirement, he tutored at his church, helping children with math.  He will be remembered for his contributions to young people in the Shreveport area.

All who knew him recognized him (and his three brothers) in a referee’s uniform, either for baseball, basketball or football.  He refereed games in Northwest Louisiana for 28 years, ending only after an amputation in 1994.  His love for sports continued after that with attending Grambling football games with his wife in “their” seats (as season ticket holders).

“Hut” met the love of his life, Velma Pruitt, in the halls of the Academic Building at Grambling College, where they both worked as students.  They were married on July 28, 1963.  This union was blessed with two loving children, Mona and Vince, to whom their all was given (and much was expected).

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bunny Ray and J.D., Jr.; and sister (Mallie Lee).  Left to cherish memories of him are his loving wife, Velma; beloved daughter and son, Mona and Vince (Jennifer); cherished granddaughters, Olivia, Ava, and Vanna; brother, L.D. (Margaret); sisters, Tressie Lee Rhodes and Annie Ruth Walker; sisters-in-law Dorothy Hudson, Marie Hudson, Marvis Anderson, Audrey Manning, Marilyn Smith (Wayne) and Sonja Kirskey; brother-in-law, Willie Pruitt (Verdis), and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions payable to the Grambling University Foundation, designating Edward and Velma Hudson Endowed Scholarship in Education as the recipient.  Please mail checks or money to: Grambling University Foundation, Inc., P. O. Box 587, Grambling, LA 71245.
