James “Jemy Lee” Scroggins was born on July 12, 1931, in Greenwood, Louisiana to the union of Jim and Pinkey Lewis Scroggins. He accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of thirteen, under the leadership of the late Reverend A. J. Holland at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Greenwood.
A faithful and diligent member, James was ordained as a deacon at the age of seventeen and served for seventy-three years, sixty of which he was Church Treasurer and a Trustee. He also served as the Senior Choir President, a member of the Brotherhood Ministry and as a life-long Sunday School song leader. Brother Scroggins was known for offering the Lord a fiery, spirited, and sincere devotion at home, work, this church, that church, EVERYBODY'S CHURCH where he had an opportunity to praise the Lord. When asked why he sang, prayed, and praised the Lord like he did, he would often reply, “I GOTTA DO IT, I’M COMPELLED TO DO IT!”
On November 22, 1949, James married the love of his life, Ruby Lee Warren. God blessed them with eight children. For over forty years, he was employed by Morrison’s Cafeteria, where he developed an outstanding work ethic. He later worked for the Sheraton Adam's Rib, where he refined his skills in service to others. He fulfilled a dream of owning and operating his own restaurant, Scroggins Mama’s to Go, ultimately in two locations.
Deacon Scroggins entered eternal rest on Friday, July 29, 2022, at Christus Highland Medical Center in Shreveport.
James was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers (R. T. and Phillip), one sister (Minnie), one son (Robert), and two granddaughters (Samantha and Maria).
Those who are left to cherish his many precious memories are: his devoted, loving and caring wife of seventy-two years, Ruby; seven children: Albert (Delores) Scroggins of Shreveport, Louisiana, John (Jackie) Scroggins of Dallas, Texas, Herbert (Glenda) Scroggins of Desoto, Texas, Youlanda (Jerome) Mitchell of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Carla (Alvin) Scroggins of Shreveport, Jerome (Ruby C.)
